Svend Web Design Captures BMMI Search Traffic - 03/01/2006

Here is an interesting story involving: Search engine placement, Why Svend web design is a firm to be respected, How web site architecture affects search engine placement, and how you can use popular phrases to get more search engine traffic.

Two years ago, around Blue Monkey Media's search engine infancy, a routine search on Google yielded an interesting result.  Naturally, being a company new to the search engine competition arena, we checked to see how sites were doing on the engines.  Well before our goal of "fargo web design" we just wanted "Blue Monkey Media".  So, what would a search for "blue monkey media" on Google yield?  Well, first you would see our company, as I did.  And second, up right behind us, is Svend Web Design.

I would provide you a link, however the powers that be I suspect have found article and removed contibution page.
What di you get when you clicked on the link?  Well, it's a wonderful paragraph on how beautiful Blue Monkey Web Design's work is.  At first I thought; Wow, this guy is really nice, and look at the really cool things he is saying about our little company.

Actually, that feeling only lasted a moment, and was followed by a slight giggle of respect and curiousity.  After a 30 minute phone call to Svend himself, my suspicions were confirmed.  Svend had noticed that our company's website was searched for frequently on the internet.  However, we are not so special.  Svend makes scores, or more, of these types of pages: web pages dedicated to companies he loves.  Svend knew that a small company would be easy to get next to, if not ahead of,  by creating a slick dedication page.  I only call it a dedication because that is the guise that hides the true reason for creating a page dedicated to a competitors workmanship. The true reason is, of course, to capture the opponents potential clients via search engine traffic.
Let's take a look at how a dedication page works.

Here is the recipe for making your own knock-off of a competitors search traffic page:
Write a page about your own webdesign company. Let's say about 4 paragraphs.
Place the competitions website name in the first paragraph.
Add competition to H1 Tag "That's the big title".
A pinch of competitors name in the meta tags "This is the stuff only the engines see".
1 teaspoon of competitors name in the title bar.
Then attach this page to your website and you are done.

Is it really that easy?  Sure it is, just check out the example from our search above.  Now, it is not going to work with a monster softdrink company or similarly mainstreamed businesses.  Simply because there are too many webites making reference to the word.   But, for an original name, like Blue Monkey Media, it is a simple process.

Does this work on the other engines?  Yes, for Svend it did.  The same search for "Blue Monkey Media" will yield Svend in the top five listed results for Google, MSN, and Yahoo.  That is really all that we care about.  Between the three search engines you have over 80% of all of the searches done on the net.

The long and the short of it from my perspective: Svend taught me what I had already learned from countless optimization experts.  Before meeting Svend I had not seen such an obvious example of it.  He does nice work.  If he snags a couple of potential clients they would get nice sites that would rank well on the engines.  If you are taking care of your customers, it's your duty to bring new ones in.

UPDATE: 1 October 2006 the search example still works - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=svend+web+design&btnG=Google+Search
